Lower Gorge Explorer, Explore 200 Years of Lower Gorge History
Thursday walks are 1½ to 2 hours. The walks at the Rose Festival and River Romance will be 3 hours. Participants must be able to walk four miles at a moderate pace. Terrain is generally flat but a few walks have more difficult spots. No preregistration is necessary. Participants will meet at the designated meeting place and car pool to the starting point. Restroom facilities are limited. Wear comfortable clothing and shoes. Bring drink and snacks as preferred. Rain or shine. Thursday, June 2, 6 pm, Maplewood North - Meet at the Maplewood Rose Garden Parking Lot, corner of Lake Ave. and Driving Park. Walk the west side of the Genesee Gorge starting at St. Bernard’s Park going through Maplewood Park and ending at the Rose Garden. Thursday, June 9, 6 pm, Lower Falls - Meet at the Maplewood Rose Garden Parking Lot. Hike includes Kelsey’s Landing and McCrackenville as well as the Lower and Middle Falls.

Saturday, June 18, 9 am (Maplewood Rose Festival) - Meet in the Maplewood Rose Garden Parking Lot, corner of Lake Ave. and Driving Park. Walk the west side of the Genesee Gorge from St. Bernard’s Park through Maplewood Park to the Lower and Middle Falls.

Sunday, June 19, 9 am (Maplewood Rose Festival) - Meet in the Seneca Park Zoo Parking Lot. Explore the Southern environs of Seneca Park and the surrounding riverfront neighborhood including: Seth Green switchback trail and the Rochester School for the Deaf.

Thursday, July 14, 6 pm, Lakefront - Meet on Tamarack St., just off Beach Ave. Walk begins at the Denzel Carousel in Ontario Beach Park and proceeds west. See the “secret sidewalk.”

Thursday, July 21, 6 pm, Charlotte - Meet at the Denzel Carousel in Ontario Beach Park. Visit the Charlotte/Genesee Lighthouse, Charlotte Cemetery and the Bill Davis overlook.

Thursday, July 28, 6 pm, Turning Point Park - Meet at the Petten St. parking lot at the Genesee River. Petten Street runs east off of Lake Avenue just south of the O’Rorke Bridge.

Thursday, August 4, 6 pm, Cemeteries – Meet at the entrance of Riverside Cemetery. Visit historic Riverside and Holy Sepulchre Cemeteries, including the grave of Rattlesnake Pete.

Saturday, October 8, 9 am (River Romance weekend) - Meet on Tamarack St., Tamarack runs south off Beach Ave. View the lakefront homes, “secret sidewalk”, Charlotte Cemetery, the Charlotte/Genesee Lighthouse, and the Bill Davis Overlook.

Sunday, October 9, 9 am (River Romance weekend) - Meet at Petten St. parking lot. Petten Street runs east off of lake Avenue just south of the O’Rorke Bridge. Hike features Riverside and Holy Sepulchre cemeteries and the Genesee Riverway Trail and its spectacular elevated riverwalk over the Turning Basin.
